As you know, I had the exclusive chance to do an interview with Nathalie Colin, creative director of Swarovski, two weeks ago at Baselworld, where Swarovski was presenting their first men watch collection. And finally here the interview is. It was a great experience and Nathalie was so nice and open! Hope you like it:)
Swarovski is a brand that is very known for female jewellery and now you started to focus on men. How did this idea of focusing on men develop?
You know, there were many different observations. On the one side we had several men coming in to our stores and asking the sales people “Do you have anything for men?” and every time they were kind of disappointed. We only had a few sorts of cufflinks. But then during the Fashion Week presentation a male journalist came to me asking me “When will you do something for us?”
And then we also had women coming to the store searching for a gift for their boyfriend or husband and we had nothing besides the small objects.
So it’s because of this plus the observation on the market, that the men market was becoming much more fashionable and open for new colors, materials and categories. So we said, it would be a possibility to enter this market, but first we spent some time on that idea, because we had some kind of fear that the strong signature we have for the female would be a kind of barrier for us to break into the men market. So we spent 3 years discussing before we decided to go for it and we were totally amazed by the success. The men’s jewellery was prelaunched in Japan and after 2 months we were sold out. So we were totally taken by the success.
Well, not all men are into wearing jewellery or big watches. So what would you say, what type of men wears Swarovski?
I think, it’s a new generation of men, who are taking care of themselves and don’t rely on a women. They take it as their own responsibility to express themselves and their personality with accessories and their look. They build themselves and they decide for themselves.
Can you tell me something about the Swarovski spring collection and your favorite pieces?
In this spring watch collection there is a strong trend for pastel and white. For men I love this white watch with ceramic and for the females there’s one concept I find very nice. It’s called “Lovely Cristals”. It’s very playful and a new concept, that we’re presenting the first time here in Basel.
Piazza Grande and Lovely Cristals
And what about the jewellery?
In the jewellery collection it’s definitely about the sixties vintage spirit. The collection was called “Swing, sing & shine”, inspired by the sixties comedies and musicals, a collection with lot of pastel.
Can you already tell us something about the fall collection?
Sure, the fall collection was presented for the first time last week. It’s a kind of rock royalty and it’s called “Kingdom of Jewels”. It’s a mix of very aristocratic royal inspiration mixed with a rock edge. So the muse is a rock star and in my imagination her mother is Chinese and her father a rock star from the 70ies, so she has a little bit of this Chinese, multicultural influence and the rocking influence from her father.
Nathalie, what fascinates you about jewellery?
I think it’s with jewellery you can really change your silhouette and you can express your mood. So for me jewellery is almost like a mood barometer. I look at your jewellery and I know in which mood you are.
What kind of jewellery do you personally wear?
I love big cuffs! I really wear a lot of cuffs and I love big cocktail rings, because I speak a lot with my hands.
Would you say, that there are some kind of must-haves, when it comes to jewellery?
Yes, I think for me the must-haves are, that on one side you need to have a nice ring, which is comfortable, a ring that you can wear for example in the office, where you use your hands a lot. For going-out I think you should have something very sparkling. For cocktails I think the focus is more on the face and not so much on the hands.
I also think it’s nice to have a piece that adds a little twist. Like if you’re a more classic person it’s nice to have a piece of jewellery that slightly gives you a touch of humor on your silhouette. For example a long pendant, with a figurative motive, that doesn’t change your overall look, but with a little twist, that will make the look more personal and unique.
What about your must-have watches?
When it comes to the watches you should have the Octea. To me it’s really the must-have watch.
Finally I’d like to know something about your work. What’s a normal day like at your office?
Octea Chrono and Octea Sport
Every day looks very different from the other. It starts with several meetings with my team, to maybe review the design, discuss about the inspiration or a new concept, and sometimes I also have meetings with the communication team to discuss the new campaign, to review the concept of an exhibition or to prepare an event. Next Monday I will spend the whole day doing the fitting of the next catwalk collection. I designed the clothes and now I have to do the fitting with all the accessories.
Then I also have meetings with the press, I travel quite a lot, so my everyday life is very varied and that is what is so great about my job, the variety of people and topics.
Nathalie, thank you for the interview! And a huge thanks to Nadine and Mira, for organizing this and for supporting me!!
